Our class 16. Gerund and infinitive

Please, study these two lists of the verbs that have fixed rules on the use of Infinitive or Bare-Infinitive (without “to”).

(V + to V) VERBS FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY AN INFINITIVE

1. afford - to be able to buy or do something because you have enough money

to be able to do something without it causing problems
I can’t afford to buy it.

2. agree - to have the same opinion, or to accept a suggestion or idea
They agreed to help us.

3. appear - to seem
She appears to be tired.

4. arrange - to planprepare, or organize something 

I’1l arrange to meet you at the airport.

5. ask - to put a question to someone, or to request an answer from someone

to request or invite someone to go somewhere with you or to come to your home
He asked to come with us.

6. can’t bear - not to accepttolerate, or endure something, especially something unpleasant

I can’t bear to wait in long lines.

7. beg - to make a very strong and urgent request
He begged to come with us.

8. begin
It began to rain.

9. care - to think that something is important and to feel interested in it or upset about it
I don’t care to see that show.

10. claim - to say that something is true or is a factalthough you cannot prove it and other people might not believe it
She claims to know a famous movie star.

11. consent - to agree to do something, or to allow someone to do something

to give official permission or agreement for something to happen
She finally consented to marry him.

12. continue
He continued to speak.

13. decide
I have decided to leave on Monday.

14. demand - to ask for something forcefully, in a way that shows that you do not expect to be refused
I demand to know who is responsible.

15. deserve - to have earned or to be given something because of the way you have behaved or the qualities you have
She deserves to win the prize.

16. expect -  to think or believe something will happen, or someone will arrive

to think that someone should behave in a particular way or do a particular thing
I expect to enter graduate school in the fall.

17. fail
She failed to return the book to the library on time.

18. forget
I forgot to mail the letter.

19. hate
I hate to make sil1y mistakes.

20. hesitate - to pause before you do or say something, often because you are uncertain or nervous about it
Don’t hesitate to ask for my help.

21. hope
Jack hopes to arrive next week.

22. learn
He learned to play the piano.

23. like
I like to go to the movies.

24. love
I love to go to operas.

25. manage - to succeed in doing something, esp. something difficult

to be able to use something, for example time or money, in an effective way
She managed to finish her work early.

26. mean
I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.

27. need
I need to have your opinion.

28. offer
They offered to help us.

29. plan
I am planning to have a party.

30. prefer
Ann prefers to walk to work.

31. prepare
We prepared to welcome them.

32. pretend - to behave as if something is true when you know that it is not, esp. in order to deceive people or as a game
He pretends not to understand.

33. promise - to tell someone that you will certainly do something
I promise not to be late.

34. refuse - to say or show that you are not willing to do, accept, or allow something
I refuse to believe his story.

35. regret - to feel sorry about a situationespecially something sad or wrong or a mistake that you have made
I regret to tell you that you failed.

36. remember
I remembered to lock the do or.

37. seem - to appear to be
That cat seems to be friendly.

38. can’t stand - to hate someone or something
I can’t stand to wait in long lines.

39. start
It started to rain.

40. struggle - to experience difficulty and make a very great effort in order to do something

to use a lot of effort to defeat someone, prevent something, or achieve something
I struggled to stay awake.

41. swear - to promise or say firmly that you are telling the truth or that you will do something or behave in a particular way

to use words that are rude or offensive as a way of emphasizing what you mean or as a way of insulting someone or something
She swore to tell the truth.

42. threaten - to tell someone that you will kill or hurt them or cause problems if they do not do what you want
She threatened to tell my parents.

43. try
I’m trying to learn English.

44. volunteer - to offer to do something that you do not have to do, often without having been asked to do it and/or without expecting payment
He volunteered to help us.

45. wait
I will wait to hear from you.

46. want
I want to tell you something.

47. wish
She wishes to come with us.

(V+ pro(noun)+to V) VERBS FOLLOWED BY A (PRO) NOUN+AN INFINITIVE

1. advise - to give someone useful information, or to tell them what you think they should do
She advised me to wait until tomorrow.

2. allow -to give permission for someone to do something, or to not prevent something from happening  

She allowed me to use her car.

3. ask
I asked John to help us.

4. beg
They begged us to come.

5. cause - to make something happenespecially something bad
Her laziness caused her to fail.

6. challenge - to invite someone to compete or take partespecially in a game or argument

to test someone's ability or determination
She challenged me to race her to the corner.

7. convince - to cause someone to believe something or to do something
I couldn’t convince him to accept our help.

8. dare - to be brave enough to do something difficult or dangerous, or to be rude or silly enough to do something that you have no right to do
Dare you tell him the news?

9. encourage - to help someone to feel confident and able to do something, or to give advice to someone to do something
He encouraged me to try again.

10. expect
I expect you to be on time.

11. forbid - to not allow something, or to order someone not to do something
I forbid you to tell him.

12. force - to make something happen or make someone do something difficultunpleasant, or unusualespecially by threatening or not offering the possibility of choice
They forced him to tell the truth.

13. hire - to pay to use something for a short period

to employ someone or pay someone to do a particular job
She hired a boy to mow the lawn.

14. instruct
He instructed them to be careful

15. invite
Harry invited the Johnsons to come to his party.

16. need
We needed Chris to help us figure out the solution.

17. order - (esp. of a person in authority) to tell someone to do something
The judge ordered me to pay a fine.

18. permit - to allow something, or make something possible
He permitted the children to stay up late.

19. persuade - to make someone do or believe something by giving them a good reason to do it or by talking to that person and making them believe it
I persuaded him to come for a visit.

20. remind - to make someone think of something they have forgotten or might have forgottenor to bring back a memory to someone-
She reminded me to lock the door.

21. require - to need something or make something necessary
Our teacher requires us to be on time.

22. teach
My brother taught me to swim.

23. tell
The doctor told me to take these pills.

24. urge - to strongly advise or try to persuade someone to do a particular thing
I urged her to apply for the job.

25. want
I want you to be happy.

26. warn - to make someone realize a possible danger or problemespecially one in the future
I warned you not to drive too fast
